BNP Welcomes February Election Announcement as ‘Historic Step Toward Democratic Transition’

BNP Welcomes February Election Announcement

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has officially welcomed the Chief Adviser’s declaration to hold national elections in February 2026, calling it a “historic announcement” that could pave the way for breaking political deadlock and initiating a genuine democratic transition in the country.

Speaking at a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Wednesday, party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the announcement would “clear the path for democratic restoration” and end years of political stagnation.

“This is not just a date for elections—it is a promise to the people. BNP believes this historic decision will help dismantle the culture of fear and restore the people’s right to vote,” Fakhrul said.

He expressed optimism that the interim government and the Election Commission would take all necessary steps to ensure that the upcoming election is free, fair, inclusive, and acceptable to all political stakeholders. “People want this election. They will stand guard to protect it,” Fakhrul added, emphasizing the urgency and public demand for a credible electoral process.

The press briefing followed an emergency meeting of the BNP Standing Committee held Tuesday night, hours after Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus delivered his nationally televised address. Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman presided over the meeting virtually from London.

Standing beside Fakhrul at the briefing was senior BNP leader and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, who clarified that any reforms to the constitution or state structure must come through the newly elected Parliament. “This is the lawful and constitutional process,” he said, dismissing speculation about any alternative frameworks.

BNP also extended its full support to the Declaration of July, unveiled by Professor Yunus at the National Parliament premises on Tuesday afternoon. Fakhrul said the declaration marks the beginning of a collective journey toward a “New Bangladesh” rooted in equality, justice, human dignity, and progressive values.

“The political commitments made in the July Declaration must be fulfilled. If honored in good faith, this could mark the rebirth of a democratic, inclusive, and prosperous Bangladesh,” Fakhrul added.

Commenting on the interim government’s efforts since the July Uprising, the BNP leader acknowledged that Professor Yunus had inherited a collapsed political and economic system. “He has initiated broad-based reforms through consultations with all political parties. We recognize these efforts,” he said.

When asked about the possible return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to the country, Fakhrul responded, “As soon as possible. We are waiting.”
