A violent clash between two groups during a wedding in Thantoli, Madaripur municipality led to over 100 cocktail explosions, destruction of nearly 15 homes, and five people injured in the early hours of Monday.
The conflict began on Sunday evening, following a minor dispute over sitting arrangements on chairs at a wedding held at Planet Community Centre for Mamun, a son of Shahjahan from Pakdi area, who recently returned from Italy. The disagreement occurred between Akib Khan, son of Fazlul Khan, and Moin Munshir, son of Dabir Munshir, both local residents.
While the issue was initially resolved by guests, tensions escalated the following evening, resulting in repeated cocktail explosions, widespread panic, and a second round of clashes around 9 p.m. Police from Sadar Model Thana intervened with tear gas to bring the situation under control.
On Monday early morning, the two groups clashed again, during which about 15 houses were vandalized and five people sustained injuries, later treated at various hospitals. Names of the injured have not been disclosed.
Local residents reported that the conflict primarily involved Akib and Moin’s groups, affecting ordinary citizens in the area. The repeated cocktail explosions caused fear among locals, including children.
OC Abul Kalam Azad of Madaripur Sadar Model Thana said,
“Police rushed to the scene to control the situation. Additional forces have been deployed to maintain peace, and those involved will be identified and legal action taken.”
The suspects remain at large, and authorities continue investigations to restore stability in the area.
