Child Drowns During Eid Visit to Village Home in Rangpur

A three-year-old child tragically drowned after returning from Dhaka to his village home for the Eid holidays in Pirgachha Upazila of Rangpur. The incident occurred around 3:00 pm on Friday (March 20) in Anantaram Ambari village under Sadar Union.

The deceased, Omar Faruk (3), was the son of Mojibur Rahman, a resident of the village.

According to local sources, Mojibur Rahman works at a garment factory in Dhaka. He returned home on Thursday with his wife and child to celebrate Eid. On Friday afternoon, the child slipped into a water-filled pit near a cattle farm at a neighbouring house without anyone noticing.

After some time, he was found floating in the water. He was quickly rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Family members and locals alleged that the pit had been dug about two years ago by a neighbour, Tajrul Islam, to drain waste and water from a cattle farm. Despite repeated requests to cover or fill the pit, no action was taken. Local representatives had also attempted to resolve the issue, but it remained unaddressed.

They claim that the uncovered pit led to the child’s death and have demanded justice, holding Tajrul Islam responsible.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Khondkar Muhibbul of Pirgachha Police Station said:

“Police have been sent to the scene, and necessary legal steps are being taken.”
