Bangladeshi Dies in Indian Jail After Illegal Entry; Body Returns Home After 38 Days

A Bangladeshi man, identified as Khairuzzaman (42), who had illegally crossed into India in search of work and was later detained by Indian authorities, has died in custody and his body has finally been returned home after 38 days.

On Thursday afternoon (19 March 2026), Khairuzzaman’s remains were handed over to his family through the Changrabandha (Burimari) land port in Lalmonirhat. His family comes from West Kaludanga village in Gunai Gachh Union, Ulipur Upazila, Kurigram.

Sources say that about three and a half years ago, Khairuzzaman went to India without legal permission seeking a livelihood. He was later arrested by law enforcement there and was serving time in jail. While in detention, he fell ill and was being taken to Jalpaiguri Government Medical College Hospital on 10 February, where he died on the way.

Efforts to bring his body back involved coordination between the administrations and diplomatic channels of both countries. After 38 days of procedures, the body was formally handed over in the presence of representatives from the Bangladesh High Commission in Kolkata, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), BSF, police, and customs officials from both sides. It was then delivered to his family.

According to OC Said Ibne Siddique of Ulipur Police, legal processes have been completed and the body has been returned to the family. The family plans to bury him in their local graveyard later Thursday night.
