An explosion outside a Jewish community school in Amsterdam has caused minor damage to the exterior of the building, authorities said. No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning (March 14), local time, in front of the school located in the Dutch capital. Reuters reported the development.
Mayor Calls It a Planned Attack
The mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, described the incident as a planned attack against the Jewish community.
“The Jewish community in Amsterdam is increasingly facing hatred, which is completely unacceptable,” she said.
“This is an act of cowardly aggression against the Jewish community.”
Halsema added that the authorities are treating the incident with utmost seriousness and that security will be further strengthened at Jewish institutions across the city.
Only Orthodox Jewish School in the Country
According to the report, the institution is the only specialized school in the Netherlands for Orthodox Jewish students. Due to previous threats, the school had already been protected with a wall fitted with sharp metal barriers around its perimeter.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause and motive behind the explosion.
