Jamaat Suspends Deputy Speaker Proposal, Will Decide After July Charter Talks

In the 13th National Parliament, the opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami has temporarily rejected the ruling BNP’s verbal proposal regarding the Deputy Speaker post.

The party’s Secretary General, Mia Golam Parwar, said the final decision on the Deputy Speaker will be made after discussions on the July Charter in the National Parliament. Speaking briefly to reporters after a parliamentary committee meeting on Wednesday (March 11), Parwar said,

“We are not accepting the government’s proposal for now. Our position on the Deputy Speaker will be clear only after the July Charter discussions.”

Earlier, on March 2, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated that the government wishes to respect the July National Charter and begin political reconciliation on the basis of consensus. He noted that the ruling party had verbally offered the Deputy Speaker position to the main opposition party.

However, Jamaat’s Central Working Committee member and Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir warned on Facebook that if reforms under the July Charter and public referendum are not implemented, the party will not accept the Deputy Speaker post merely as a ceremonial or decorative position. He emphasized that honest and capable leadership is essential to tackle national crises and maintain unity.
