Israel Conducts Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon, Escalates Regional Tensions

Southern Lebanon witnessed renewed Israeli airstrikes, targeting open areas between forests and hills, with no immediate reports of casualties, according to Al Jazeera. However, Israeli military aircraft continue to patrol the skies over the region.

Al-Mayadeen TV confirmed that Israeli jets conducted sequential operations targeting the highlands of Iqlim al-Tuffah. Meanwhile, Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV reported that explosives were dropped for the third time from Israeli “quadcopter” drones over the town of Markaba.

On Thursday, February 26, an Israeli strike in the Bekaa Valley killed a 16-year-old Syrian teenager, Hussein Mohsin al-Khalaf, and injured 29 others, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health and the National News Agency (NNA). Despite the November 2024 ceasefire, Israeli attacks have claimed over 300 lives in Lebanon, including 127 civilians, as per UN reports.

The ongoing conflict, which began in October 2023, has killed more than 4,000 people and injured around 17,000 across Lebanon. Last week, Israeli strikes in the Bekaa Valley and near the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in Sidon killed at least 12 people. Israel continues to occupy parts of Lebanon, hindering village reconstruction and the return of displaced residents.

The Lebanese government stated that it has nearly completed the demilitarization of Hezbollah south of the Litani River and requires four more months for the second phase. Hezbollah rejected this, asserting that the demilitarization terms only apply to the southern river region and will not surrender arms as long as Israel maintains attacks and occupation.

In addition, Israeli forces carried out a sudden strike in Iran earlier today.
