High-Stakes Battle Begins in Brahmanbaria-2: Junaid Al Habib, Rumeen Farhana, and Ashraf Mahdi Set to Clash

Rumin Farhana, Maulana Junaid Al Habib, Ashraf Mahdi,

With the deadline for symbol allocation ending today, January 21, the electoral landscape for the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency (Srail, Ashuganj, and parts of Bijoynagar) is officially set. As official campaigning kicks off tomorrow, January 22, all eyes are on this high-profile seat where three influential candidates are locked in a complex triangular contest.

The Candidates and the Symbols

Following the finalization of symbols, the ballot for Brahmanbaria-2 will feature:

  • Maulana Junaid Al Habib: The Vice President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, contesting as the official nominee of the BNP-led alliance. He will be fighting with his party symbol, the ‘Date Palm’ (Khejur Gach).
  • Barrister Rumeen Farhana: The former Assistant International Affairs Secretary of the BNP’s National Executive Committee. After refusing to accept the alliance’s nomination of Junaid Al Habib, she opted to run as an independent candidate. Consequently, she was expelled from the BNP on December 30. She will contest with the ‘Duck’ (Haas) symbol.
  • Ashraf Mahdi: The Joint Convener of the NCP and the nominee for the 10-party alliance. He is contesting with the ‘Water Lily Bud’ (Shapla Koli) symbol. Notably, his candidacy strengthened after Maulana Mobarak Hossain, the Jamaat-e-Islami nominee, withdrew from the race to offer him formal support.

The Missing Symbols and the ‘Kingmaker’ Voters

In a striking turn of events for this traditional stronghold, the country’s two most recognizable symbols—the BNP’s ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ (Dhaner Sheesh) and Jamaat-e-Islami’s ‘Scales’ (Daripalla)—will not appear on the ballot paper this time.

Despite their absence, political analysts believe the supporters of these two parties will hold the “master key” to the election. With the BNP-led alliance backing Junaid Al Habib and the local Jamaat unit tilting toward Ashraf Mahdi, the shift in grassroots votes will be the deciding factor in who claims victory.

A Test of Loyalty and Popularity

The race is being viewed as a significant test of political survival, particularly for Barrister Rumeen Farhana, who is banking on her individual popularity and past performance to challenge the official alliance candidate. Meanwhile, Maulana Junaid Al Habib is relying on the collective strength of the alliance’s organizational structure. Ashraf Mahdi remains a formidable contender, bolstered by the strategic withdrawal of Jamaat-e-Islami in his favor.

As the candidates hit the campaign trail tomorrow, the atmosphere in Srail and Ashuganj remains tense yet vibrant, as voters prepare to decide the fate of these three heavyweight leaders.
