A 22-year-old student was brutally hacked to death, allegedly by his close friend, in the Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh on Thursday night. The accused, carrying the murder weapon, a ‘Chinese axe,’ immediately surrendered at the local police station, confessing to the crime.
The victim was identified as Muntashir Fahim (22), son of Badal Mia from Chikna Monohor village. The arrested suspect is Ohidul Islam (22), son of Zahirul Islam from Darirampur village of Trishal Municipality.
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 8:45 PM on Thursday at the grounds of the Trishal Government Nazrul Academy. Shortly after the murder, Ohidul Islam walked into the police station holding the axe and told officers, “Fahim ruined my life, so I killed him with the Chinese axe.” He was immediately taken into custody.
Based on the suspect’s information, a police team proceeded to the scene where they found Fahim’s body lying near a water tank on the eastern side of the field. The body was subsequently recovered and taken to Trishal Police Station.
Fahim’s family confirmed that the victim was a student at a university in Malaysia. He had returned home four months ago and was scheduled to fly back this Saturday to start classes on December 25.
The victim’s father, Rezaul Islam, expressed shock at the murder. “I don’t know why my son was killed. What grievance did they have? My son didn’t even live in the country. Why was he hacked to death so mercilessly?” he questioned.
Monshur Ahmed, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Trishal Police Station, stated that the two young men were close friends. “The arrested youth claimed his life was ruined, which is why he murdered Fahim. He did not elaborate further,” OC Ahmed said. The police have sent the victim’s body to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The detained suspect is being rigorously interrogated to determine the actual motive behind the killing, and legal procedures are underway.
