BNP Standing Committee Member Begum Selima Rahman on Monday (14 October) said the party may nominate at least 5% women candidates in the upcoming national election, with hopes of increasing the figure to ensure a stronger political role for women in Bangladesh.
She made the remarks while addressing a coordination meeting for Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts, organised by the BNP’s Nari O Shishu Odhikar Forum (Women and Children’s Rights Forum), held at the Khulna Press Club.
“Women’s advancement in education and professional sectors in Bangladesh began under the leadership of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia. Now, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, a new wave of women’s awakening will take place,” said Selima Rahman.
Forum Member Secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury said the BNP is committed to nominating competent women candidates in the next election and expressed confidence that they will be elected through popular mandate.
BNP Central Information and Research Secretary Azizul Bari Helal stated, “National development is impossible without the political, social and economic emancipation of women.”
Acting Organising Secretary for Khulna Division Anindya Islam Amit added that the party aims to build a secure and prosperous future for women by ensuring access to education, healthcare and employment.
Among others, central leaders Jayanta Kumar Kund, Shafiqul Alam Mona, MA Salam, Rahmat Ullah Palash, Moniruzzaman Montu and Shafiqul Alam Tuhin were present at the event.
