A Bangladeshi youth named Askor Ali (24) was shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) early Saturday morning along the Haripur border in Thakurgaon district.
The incident occurred near pillar number 353 at the Minapur border area around 4:00 AM inside Indian territory, according to local sources and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The victim, Askor Ali, hailed from Kanura village under Jibonpur union in Haripur upazila.
According to BGB officials and eyewitnesses, Askor Ali and several others approached the barbed-wire fence close to the Indian side of the border when members of the Kishanganj Battalion of BSF opened fire. Askor was shot and died on the spot. His body reportedly remains about 200 yards inside Indian territory.
Following the incident, BGB has deployed additional personnel in the area to control the situation. BSF has also reinforced its presence across the border.
The 42nd BGB Battalion in Dinajpur has confirmed the incident and stated that efforts are underway to recover the body through diplomatic communication. “We have contacted BSF and requested a flag meeting to bring back the deceased’s body,” the battalion stated in a press release.
Lieutenant Colonel Tanzir Ahmed, Commanding Officer of Thakurgaon 50 BGB Battalion, confirmed hearing of the incident but clarified that it falls under the jurisdiction of the 42 BGB Battalion in Dinajpur.
Officer-in-Charge of Haripur Police Station, Md Zakaria Mondol, also confirmed the report of a Bangladeshi national being killed by BSF gunfire. He added that further details would be available upon visiting the scene.
This incident adds to the growing list of border fatalities and raises renewed concerns over the use of lethal force by BSF along the Indo-Bangladesh frontier.
