In the midst of escalating hostilities between New Delhi and Islamabad, former U.S. President Donald Trump has made a dramatic and unexpected announcement: India and Pakistan have agreed to a “complete and immediate ceasefire.”
Taking to Truth Social on Saturday (May 10), Trump declared,
“After long overnight negotiations mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a complete and immediate ceasefire.”
He added,
“Congratulations to both countries for using common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Trump’s statement comes just as tensions had reached a boiling point. Pakistan had launched a large-scale retaliatory military campaign named Operation Bunyan-un-Marsus, targeting over 20 Indian military installations across multiple regions. Senior security officials in Islamabad told Geo News that the attacks were in direct response to India’s alleged aggression across the Line of Control and into Pakistan’s sovereign territory.
This escalation followed reported Indian missile strikes on several Pakistani cities during the nights of May 5 and 6. Analysts believe the situation was rapidly approaching the brink of a full-scale war.
Amid this volatile backdrop, Trump’s sudden ceasefire announcement has sparked global attention. While official confirmation from either India or Pakistan remained pending at the time of reporting, Trump’s claim raises the question: did he actually prevent a war?
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level emergency meeting with top military and security officials. Sources say the meeting included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, the chiefs of the army, navy, and air force, as well as Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan. The purpose: to assess the current security scenario and formulate future strategy.
