Chhatra Dal Leader Expelled Within an Hour Over Facebook Post Backing Referendum

A local leader of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) was expelled within an hour of posting on Facebook in support of implementing a referendum, according to a party statement issued on Monday.

The expulsion of Rakibul Hasan was announced in a press release signed by District Senior Vice-President Amrul Hasan Mollah, citing specific allegations of violating party discipline. He was removed from both his primary membership and all party positions. The statement also instructed party leaders and activists to refrain from maintaining any communication with him.

According to sources, at around 1:00 pm on Monday, a Facebook account named “MD Rakibull Hasan” posted a message titled, “Implement the referendum verdict without delay.” Within approximately an hour, an expulsion order was issued against him with the approval of District President Syed Sadikul Islam Pavel and General Secretary Md. Jahangir Khan.

Rakibul Hasan had been involved in Chhatra Dal politics for a long time. He reportedly played an active role in the July movement, particularly in the district town and Aditmari. Political sources also said he was attacked by activists of rival student and youth organisations during BNP-led protests in 2022.

Reacting to his expulsion, Rakibul Hasan said:

“I have been interested in BNP politics since my school days. The party’s stance against injustice attracted me. I have been involved with Chhatra Dal since the 10th grade. I stood with people during the July movement. I want justice for those incidents and the implementation of a referendum for the people. I have been expelled just for a single Facebook post.”

When contacted, Amrul Hasan Mollah said the decision was taken due to a breach of party discipline and declined to comment further.
