Police came under attack while attempting to resolve a family dispute involving relatives of Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Afzal Hossain in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia.
The incident took place around 8:00 pm on Thursday in the Elongipara area, where police were reportedly targeted with stones, leading to vandalism of a police vehicle. The front windshield of the Officer-in-Charge’s (OC) vehicle was smashed, though no casualties were reported.
Afzal Hossain is the Member of Parliament from the Kushtia-4 (Kumarkhali–Khoksa) constituency representing Jamaat-e-Islami.
According to police and local sources, a longstanding family dispute between the MP’s two cousins, Anwar Hossain and Shiplul, escalated tensions in the area. Upon receiving information, Kumarkhali Thana OC Jamal Uddin, along with a police team, went to the scene.
As police arrived, Anwar, Shiplul, and their associates allegedly began hurling stones at the police vehicle, causing damage.
Efforts to contact Anwar Hossain for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not answer multiple phone calls.
When contacted, a person identifying himself as a relative of MP Afzal Hossain told Prothom Alo:
“The MP is currently busy in a meeting. I will inform him about your call. He will speak later.”
The MP’s nephew, Robiul Islam, stated that his uncle was not present at home during the incident. He said tensions arose due to the family dispute, and police were informed.
“When police arrived in the area, miscreants carried out the attack,” he claimed.
Since the incident, members of both Anwar Hossain and Shiplul’s families have reportedly left their homes.
Later, around 10:30 pm, OC Jamal Uddin told the media:
“We went to the spot after receiving information about a dispute among the MP’s relatives. At that time, his cousins Sadik, Anwar, and Shiplu started throwing railway stones targeting the police vehicle.”
“The front part of the vehicle has been damaged. We could not understand why we were attacked. The law is equal for everyone. Police are active to arrest those involved, and legal action is being prepared.”
Police have launched an অভিযান in the area to detain those involved in the attack.
