Court Sentences Mohammadpur Man to Six Months in Jail for ‘Cruel’ Cat Killing

A court in Mohammadpur has sentenced Akbar Hossain Shiblu to six months in jail for the brutal killing of a cat belonging to a resident named Monsur. The ruling was handed down on Wednesday afternoon by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir.

The complainant’s lawyer, Zakir Hossain, confirmed the sentence, adding that Akbar Hossain was also fined 10,000 Taka and, for non-payment, an additional one month of simple imprisonment has been imposed. The accused was absent in court at the time of the verdict. Consequently, the court has issued a warrant of arrest against him.

The case dates back to February 5, 2025, when Nafisa Nowrin Chowdhury, representing People for Animal Welfare, filed a complaint over the cat’s killing. Following her deposition, the Mohammadpur Police conducted an investigation and submitted a report confirming the allegations.

The trial began formally on July 14, 2025, after charges were framed against Akbar Hossain Shiblu. Witness testimony concluded on December 2, 2025, with four witnesses examined. After hearing the defense and arguments from both sides, the court delivered today’s sentence.

According to the complaint, on February 1, 2025, during the afternoon at Muktijoddha Tower, 9th floor, Mohammadpur, Monsur’s cat went missing. CCTV footage later showed the accused kicking the cat repeatedly like a football. Even after the cat’s body fell motionless, the accused continued to stamp on it to ensure its death.

Witnesses immediately informed the complainant, who prepared to file a case. The evidence and CCTV footage confirmed that the killing was intentional and cruel, prompting the filing of the case. A warrant of arrest had also been requested against the accused during the case proceedings.

This case marks one of the few legal actions in Dhaka addressing animal cruelty and reflects growing public attention to acts of deliberate harm toward animals.
