The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Wednesday, February 25, deferred the recording of witness testimonies in a crimes against humanity case against Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Zunaid Ahmed Palak. The case involves allegations of a nationwide internet shutdown to facilitate mass killings and atrocities during the July-August student-led mass uprising in 2024.
Wednesday was the scheduled date for witness depositions. However, the prosecution was unable to proceed as no witnesses appeared before the court.
Next Hearing Set for March 3
Following the absence of witnesses, Prosecutor B.M. Sultan Mahmud informed the court of the situation. The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumder, subsequently fixed March 3 as the new date for recording testimonies.
The other members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haq Enam Chowdhury.
Background of the Trial
The formal trial in this case began on February 18, 2024, with the prosecution’s opening statement. The core allegations against the duo are:
- Conspiracy: Accused Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former ICT affairs adviser, allegedly masterminded the plan to shut down the internet.
- Execution: Former State Minister for ICT, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, allegedly executed the shutdown to prevent information about atrocities from reaching the global community, thereby creating a “blackout” during which protesters were detained, tortured, and killed.
Status of the Accused
As the trial continues:
- Sajeeb Wazed Joy remains a fugitive and is being tried in absentia. The court previously issued an arrest warrant for him on December 4, 2025.
- Zunaid Ahmed Palak is currently in custody and was produced in court for the proceedings.
The investigation agency submitted its probe report on December 3, 2025, and charges were formally framed against both individuals on January 21, 2026.
