A severe gas explosion in a residential kitchen in Halishahar has left nine people, including a child, severely burned, hospital sources confirmed. Doctors say all the victims are in critical condition.
The incident occurred early Monday morning at Halima Manzil, a six-story building in Halishahar H Block. The explosion took place on the third floor of one of the flats around 4:30 am, according to the Fire Service. Immediately after the blast, a fire broke out in the kitchen. Residents rushed the injured to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) before firefighters arrived.
Fire service officials, including Assistant Alamgir Hossain, reported that the flat did not use an LPG cylinder. Instead, it was connected to the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company supply. Initial assessments suggest that gas leaked from the stove, accumulated in the kitchen, and later ignited, causing the explosion and subsequent burns.
Fire service control room officials said the fire was brought under control after nearly two hours of effort by the firefighters.
Condition of the Injured
CMCH Burn Unit chief Dr. Rafiquddin Ahmed stated that all patients have suffered respiratory injuries. Hospital records indicate:
- Rani and Pakhi: 100% body burns
- Sakhawat: 100% body burns
- Another victim: 80% body burns
- Another victim: 45% body burns
- Remaining victims: 20–25% body burns
The hospital is continuing intensive care for all victims, and doctors have emphasized that the situation remains critical for several of the burn patients.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the gas accumulation and explosion. Fire safety reminders have been issued for residents to check gas connections and ventilation in their kitchens to prevent similar accidents.
