Burqa-Clad Executive Magistrate Cracks Down on Market Irregularities in Shivchar

In an innovative move to control prices during Ramadan, the executive magistrate of the mobile court in Shibchar, Madaripur, conducted a surprise market inspection disguised as a customer. Seven shops were fined for various violations during the operation.

On Friday (February 20), Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Shaikha Sultana visited the market undercover in a burqa. She inspected fish, meat, fruits, grocery stores, and other businesses, observing multiple irregularities. The operation ran from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

During the inspection, shops were penalized for overpricing, short-selling by weight, and selling goat and mutton at the same price, among other violations. A total of 12,000 taka in fines was imposed on seven shops under the Consumer Rights Protection Act, and other vendors were cautioned.

A team from Shibchar Police Station was present during the operation.

Speaking to reporters, Shaikha Sultana said, “I first monitored the market undercover, then conducted the operation. Several shops were fined, and others were warned. Stricter measures will be taken in the future. Such operations will continue.”

Residents appreciated the unconventional initiative, praising the magistrate’s efforts to protect consumers and maintain fair market practices.
