New ‘Bangladesh-Oriented Left’ Political Platform to Launch on January 16

Left-wing Politics

DHAKA – A new political platform, identifying as a “Bangladesh-pro leftist” force, is set to make its official debut this Friday (January 16). The initiative includes several prominent youth leaders, including former members of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and current leaders of the Bangladesh Students’ Union.

Mir Huzaifa Al Mamduh, a former student of Dhaka University and one of the primary organizers, shared the details on Tuesday. He clarified that while the platform includes individuals who recently resigned from the NCP, it is not a direct offshoot of that party.

“Discussions regarding this platform have been ongoing for a long time,” Mamduh stated. “It is a separate initiative aimed at building a political force aligned with pro-Bangladesh leftist ideologies.”

Key Faces and Leadership

The platform will feature several figures who were active during the July Mass Uprising. Among the notable names are:

  • Anik Roy (Former Joint Convener, NCP)
  • Tuhin Khan (Former Joint Member Secretary, NCP)
  • Nazifa Jannat (Vice President, Bangladesh Students’ Union Central Committee)
  • Meghmallar Basu (President, Bangladesh Students’ Union, Dhaka University Unit)

Meghmallar Basu told the media that the groundwork for this platform has been in development to provide a voice for the oppressed. Anik Roy added that many individuals who played significant roles in the July uprising would be part of this new journey.

The Road to a Political Party

The organizers have yet to finalize a name, though several options are currently under consideration, including ‘Jonojatra’, ‘People’s March’, ‘Gonoshafor’, ‘Ijtihad’, and ‘People’s Action’.

According to Mir Huzaifa Al Mamduh, the group will not immediately function as a formal political party. Instead, it will operate as a political platform for at least one year, focusing on:

  • Conducting policy dialogues.
  • Organizing citizens and grassroots movements.
  • Participating in social justice issues.

The platform intends to transition into a full-fledged political party approximately six months to a year after the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

Official Launch

The formal announcement and the start of the platform’s journey will take place at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on January 16.
