The National Citizen Party (NCP), a prominent youth-led political platform that emerged from the mass uprising of 2024, has announced its initial slate of candidates for the forthcoming 13th National Parliament Election, with a significant emphasis on female representation.

Out of a preliminary list of 125 nominees declared across the country, the party has nominated 14 female candidates to contest in various constituencies. The initial list of candidates was unveiled by Akhter Hossen, the party’s Member Secretary, at a press briefing in Dhaka on Wednesday (December 10) morning.

Key Women Candidates

The list features several high-profile women leaders, reflecting the party’s push for new political faces:

  • Dr. Tasnim Jara, the party’s Senior Joint Member Secretary, has been nominated for the Dhaka-9 constituency (Khilgaon, Basabo, Manda). Dr. Zara, a former Cambridge-based medical professional, is also reportedly serving as the member secretary of the NCP’s election steering committee, according to party sources.
  • Tajnuba Jabeen, Joint Convener of the NCP, will contest from Dhaka-17 (Gulshan-Banani), a major city constituency.

Nationwide Representation

The nominated women candidates hail from diverse professional and geographical backgrounds, contesting seats from metropolitan areas to remote districts:

A New Political Approach

The announcement underscores the NCP’s strategy to inject fresh, civilian-backed leadership into the electoral process. The party, which emerged from the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, has been noted for its unusual and transparent candidate selection process in November, where it interviewed over 1,000 applicants from among ordinary citizens nationwide over two days.

Furthermore, the NCP is contesting the polls as the leading component of the newly formed ‘Gonotantrik Songskar Jote’ (Democratic Reform Alliance), an alliance formed to safeguard the spirit and aspirations for reform that were kindled during the July 2024 student-led mass uprising.

Akhter Hossen stated that the candidate list was prepared to “reflect people from all sections of the country,” adding that the party remains open to public feedback on any candidate and reserves the right to review and cancel nominations if necessary.
