Farhad Mazhar Slams Govt. Negligence Over Baul Crisis: ‘This Cannot Continue’

Farhad Mazhar statement

Eminent writer, poet, and philosopher Farhad Mazhar has strongly criticized the government for ignoring persistent protests against the persecution of Baul artists and the recent violent attack on their followers in Manikganj. In a social media post today, he warned, “It is unfortunate that the government is not paying attention to our protests. This cannot continue.”

Mazhar’s statement coincided with a protest rally organized today (Monday, 11:00 AM) in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, called by the ‘Sadhuguru Bhakta O Oli-Aoliya Ashekan Parishad’ (Council of Devotee-Gurus and Devotees of Saints). The assembly demands the release of the jailed Baul artist, Abul Sarkar Maharaj, and condemns the “heinous attack” on his followers in Manikganj.

Blame on Repression, Not Dialogue

Farhad Mazhar asserted that the prolonged negligence of the authorities is escalating the crisis.

“We have been struggling for a long time against the demolition of shrines and fighting to ensure social discipline through devotion, empathy, and peaceful resolution of arguments. But unfortunately, the government is not heeding our protests,” he wrote.

He also pointed the finger at the administration for mishandling the arrest of Abul Sarkar Maharaj and the subsequent violence.

Arrest Damaged International Image

Mazhar revealed that Abul Sarkar Maharaj was a leading figure in advocating for shrines to be developed as public spaces following the July mass uprising.

“When he was arrested, we requested law enforcement not to file a case against him. We even apologized on his behalf to anyone who might have been hurt by his words,” Mazhar stated. He lamented that the law enforcement agency proceeded with the case regardless.

Regarding Sunday’s violence, where Baul followers were forced to jump into a pond to save their lives from the mob, Mazhar warned: “The way the Bauls were beaten and forced to jump into the pond for their lives has severely damaged the international image of the Advisor Government.”

He concluded that social conflicts are being fueled by the use of “law and repression” rather than “dialogue and discussion,” asserting that law enforcement alone cannot be the sole path to resolving social disputes.

Call to Action

Mazhar urged all citizens—irrespective of their religious or philosophical beliefs, including those who strive to advance society through intellect and conscience—to join the protest.

“From this meeting, we will decide on our future duties and programme of action,” he added.
