Months After Killing, Shammo’s Memory Lives On Through His Friend Shuvo

Moshiur Amin Shuvo, Shahriar Alam Shammo

National Citizen Party (NCP) central member Moshiur Amin Shuvo ensured that his closest friend, slain Dhaka University student leader Shahriar Alam Shammo, was not forgotten on the day of his wedding.

In photos shared from the ceremony, Shuvo and his bride stand beside a human-sized cutout of Shammo. Behind them, another cutout bears the words: “Justice for Shammo.”

Shuvo and Shammo’s political paths had not always been the same. Shuvo was previously active in Chatra Odhikar Parishad and Democratic Student Force, while Shammo was a Dhaka University leader of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. Yet the two stood together in the streets, united in their fight against authoritarian rule and in movements for people’s rights.

Shammo was murdered near Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13, 2025, after a confrontation escalated into a brutal knife attack. Despite multiple arrests and confessions in police custody, justice for the killing remains elusive more than four months later. Many have begun to forget the young leader — but Shuvo, even on one of the most personal days of his life, kept his friend’s memory alive.

The gesture at his wedding has sparked emotional reactions online, with many praising Shuvo for reminding the nation that Shammo’s blood still demands justice.
