CU Student Imtiaz Regains Consciousness, Recognizes Parents After Eight Days

Imtiaz Opens His Eyes: CU Student Begins Journey Back From the Brink

Chittagong University student Imtiaz Ahmed, who was critically injured in the violent clashes between students and local residents on August 31, has shown significant signs of recovery. After spending more than a week on life support, Imtiaz has begun to open his eyes and recognize his parents, according to doctors at Parkview Hospital.

Imtiaz, a student of the International Relations Department, sustained severe head injuries during the clashes on campus and was placed on life support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Six days later, on Saturday afternoon, a medical board decided to remove the life support as his condition showed signs of improvement.

His elder brother, Asaduzzaman Sajib, told reporters on Monday morning:
“Father went in to see him today. Imtiaz was slowly opening his eyes. Doctors said he will remain under observation for three more days.”

Doctors confirmed that Imtiaz’s consciousness level is fluctuating between 10 and 12, while a fully healthy person maintains a level of 15. He is showing hand and leg movement, though the left side of his body remains less responsive. Physicians expect physiotherapy to restore normal responsiveness.

Hospital authorities added that Imtiaz’s condition has improved overall. “He is recognizing his parents and responding gradually,” said ATM Rezaul Karim, Managing Director of Parkview Hospital.

Imtiaz’s family, originally from Cumilla but now residing in Bogra, rushed to Chittagong after the incident. The university administration has arranged temporary accommodation for them at a hotel in the city’s Chawk Bazar area, from where they visit him daily.

Medical boards comprising specialist doctors have convened three times so far to monitor his progress. While doctors stress the need for continued observation, the signs of recovery have brought relief to his family and fellow students who have been anxiously waiting for positive news.
