Spotlight on Tahmid Al Muddassir Chowdhury: Independent Candidate for DUCSU AGS

Spotlight on Tahmid Al Muddassir Chowdhury: Independent Candidate for DUCSU AGS

With just days remaining before the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, attention is turning toward candidates who entered the race outside party panels but have managed to carve out strong individual identities. One such contender is Tahmid Al Muddassir Chowdhury, chief organizer of the Bangladesh Democratic Student Council (BAGCHAS), who is running as an independent candidate for Assistant General Secretary (AGS).

Tahmid submitted his nomination on August 20 and declared his candidacy at a press conference alongside his wife, Nafisa Islam Sakafi. Though initially discussed within the BAGSAS panel, he ultimately chose to contest independently after the organization nominated another candidate for AGS.

Academic and Activist Background

A student of the Department of World Religions and Culture (2018–19 session), Tahmid is known both as a researcher and debater, having represented Dhaka University at the national level and contributed to conference papers and academic projects.

His student activism, however, is more widely recognized. During the July Uprising of 2024, Tahmid emerged as a central coordinator, responsible for mobilizing in the Mohammadpur–Dhanmondi region and contributing to the planning of landmark programs such as the “March for Justice.” He recalls being injured multiple times during those protests.

Following the uprising, he has remained active in pushing for a “fascism-free and democratic Bangladesh,” while also engaging in relief work, medical camps, and student rights advocacy.

Why This Candidacy Matters

In his own words, Tahmid insists that his run is not about recognition, but about responsibility:

“Do not vote for me just because you know me. Vote for whoever you think is truly qualified. If you believe I am that person, then I will accept your trust with full accountability.”

For students seeking representation outside the established panels, Tahmid presents himself as a blend of academic credibility, activist experience, and moral appeal.

As the DUCSU election approaches, it remains to be seen how much traction independent candidates like Tahmid can gain — but his profile has already ensured that his name is part of the wider conversation.
