Sudhir Babu, the 74-year-old man whose tearful grief at the funeral of his childhood friend Amir Hossain in 2021 went viral nationwide, has passed away. He died today around 12:40 PM at his home in Chapachow village, Gunbati Union, Chauddagram Upazila, Comilla, after battling liver cancer.
Sudhir Babu is survived by two sons, five daughters, and numerous grandchildren. According to his son, Arjun Chandra Das, the final rites will be completed tonight.
The nation first came to know Sudhir Babu when, on 8 September 2021, he sat by a tree at the funeral of his Muslim childhood friend Amir Hossain Saudagar, crying inconsolably. A photo capturing his grief went viral on social media and was later featured in multiple print and electronic media outlets, highlighting the profound friendship and human connection across religious lines.
Sudhir Babu and Amir Hossain had been inseparable since childhood, growing up together through play, studies, and community life in Chapachow. Later, both became successful businessmen in Gunbati Bazar, yet despite their busy schedules, they would always find hours to spend together in conversation and camaraderie.
