Extremism Threatens Bangladesh’s Soul and Existence, Warns Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that deliberate attempts are being made to erase the memory of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War. He urged citizens to remain united in safeguarding the nation’s history and spirit.

“Just as the July Uprising is true, so is the nine-month Liberation War. There is a covert attempt to make us forget 1971, and citizens must unite against it,” Fakhrul said while addressing a Janmashtami greetings exchange programme at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka today (21 August).

Fakhrul also cautioned that a form of extremism is emerging in Bangladesh, warning that it poses a grave threat to the very soul and existence of the nation. “If we let this extremism grow, the soul and existence of Bangladesh will not survive,” he added.

Calling for an end to divisive politics, Fakhrul stressed that past mistakes should not dictate the country’s future. “For the existence of Bangladesh, to move it forward, to make it more developed, we must all work together with unity,” he said.

Referring to the subcontinent’s political history, the BNP leader noted that communalism has repeatedly been used as a weapon in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. He urged all communities to rise above divisions and build an inclusive future.

“We must build a Bangladesh where there will be no discrimination among people of different faiths, where truth, justice, and human values will prevail,” Fakhrul concluded.
