The Sylhet City Corporation has temporarily suspended three of its employees over allegations of tearing down posters of the National Citizen Party (NCP) ahead of the party’s planned rally and procession.
According to a press release issued by the City Corporation on Monday evening, the suspended individuals are Akhtar and Mosharraf, both workers under the Waste Management Department, and Shahab Uddin Ahmed, a supervisor of the same unit.
Sylhet City Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer Rezai Rafin Sarkar stated, “It is not within the duties of our staff to interfere with the materials of any political party. Upon receiving the complaint, we immediately suspended the three involved individuals. Further actions will be taken once the investigation report is submitted.”
The incident occurred on Sunday night in the Shah Eidgah area of Sylhet, where NCP posters promoting their upcoming event were reportedly torn down. Video footage of the act soon went viral on social media, drawing public outrage and prompting the swift response from city authorities.
This comes at a time when NCP is gaining momentum through grassroots mobilizations and public rallies following the political shift after the July Uprising. Many observers see the prompt disciplinary action as an attempt by local authorities to maintain a neutral stance amidst growing political tension.
