Dr. Yunus to Meet BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London

Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government currently visiting the United Kingdom, is scheduled to meet BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on June 13.

Dr. Yunus departed for London on Monday evening on a four-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties with the United Kingdom.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed the upcoming meeting, stating that it is set to take place between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. local time on Friday in London.

Speaking to reporters today (Tuesday) at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, Mirza Fakhrul said, “The Chief Adviser has extended an invitation to our Acting Chairman. The meeting will be held at the hotel where Dr. Yunus is staying.”

In response to a journalist’s question, he added, “Discussions about a possible meeting have been ongoing for some time—since it was first decided that the Chief Adviser would travel to London. As our Acting Chairman is based there, it made sense that such a meeting could take place.”

“Despite being unwell, our Acting Chairman attended a meeting of the BNP’s Standing Committee yesterday,” Fakhrul noted. “He has been formally invited to meet with the Chief Adviser, and the meeting has been scheduled for June 13 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. local time. On behalf of the Standing Committee, we welcome this initiative.”

Mirza Fakhrul expressed hope that the meeting could help ease the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh. “Personally, I believe this could be a turning point given the current political context.”

Calling the planned meeting a “major political event,” he added, “This could open the door to resolving many issues and create new possibilities in the political landscape.”
